FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS.

If you have an additional question, please send it to us at info@data-access-inc.com.

Q: Can I use the Mainframe Gateway in place of a CT gateway? What about a ST gateway?

A: Yes, the Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS can be used in place of any of the other HP SNA provided gateways provided that:

  • Both the OpenVMS system and IBM mainframe have a TCP/IP stack installed and running.
  • The IBM mainframe is using the OS/390 or z/OS operating system (any version and release supported by IBM)

Q: What throughput can I expect from the Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS?

A: Unlike the HP CT or ST gateways, there is no fixed upper limit on the throughput . Throughput will depend on the TCP/IP network speed, network congestion, and availability of mainframe processor cycles.  Customers are encouraged to take advantage of a free trial period to fully evaluate the Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS in their own environment.

Q: What changes are needed on the OpenVMS system to utilize the Mainframe Gateway?

A: The same changes that would be made when using a different CT or ST gateway.  The name or address of the gateway must be changed. If the OpenVMS application explicitly specifies logical unit names, those names would need to be changed to logical unit names available on the Mainframe Gateway.

Q: My OpenVMS system currently uses DECnet to communicate with my CT or ST gateway.  What changes are needed to force the OpenVMS system to use TCP/IP?

A: No changes (except the gateway name or address) are needed.  By default, all current versions of OpenVMS SNA Products first try to establish a DECnet connection with a gateway. If a DECNet connection cannot be established, a TCP/IP connection is attempted.  Each of the products can also be customized to attempt the TCP/IP connection first.  Please see the HP product documentation for more information.

Q: How difficult is it to get the Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS working on the IBM mainframe?

A: The process is straight forward and relatively simple.

The Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS is installed using SMP/E, the standard mainframe tool for installing software.

The Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS is configured using a simple text file.  Several example configuration files are included with the product.

The Mainframe Gateway for OpenVMS executes as a normal application program with no unusual rights or privileges.  There is no need to perform an I/O GEN or IPL.
